Our first night in the woods

I didn't sleep very well. The refreshing cold kept me awake at first, then it was the urge to pee, and later on, at 4:30am, the dogs got restless and started rough-housing IN THE TENT before they darted outside to chase something.

Birds were up at that time to start their morning songs. And again I heard the same fluty bird song from last night.

It was too cold for me to get up at my usual 5:30am.
"Are you going to get up and make coffee?" I asked Kevin.
"It's too cold outside! The water was ice!" he replied. I believed him.

An hour later I was surprised he was still tucked in his sleeping bag.
"Aren't you going to get up?" I asked again.
"I will."
"Was the water really frozen? I should have a bottle in my backpack we could use for coffee..."
"Nah, I just said that because I didn't want to get up!"
"But you're from Massachusetts, you love the cold!"
"I'm an Arizonan. I love the heat!"

We finally got up at 7:15am and didn't leave the area until two hours later, when we headed on FR24 to Hannagan Meadow. I wanted to check out the lodge, the meadow and the nearby campsite, which I had read on a website had eight spacious campsites with water and they were free sites!

It was a lovely drive along Fish Creek, which meandered along the forest road on either side, with steep gorges and tall pines towering over us. This was truly alpine at its best.
